About the Journal

Estado & comunes is a biannual specialized publication edited in Spanish by the Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales (IAEN), in Ecuador. Its purpose is to promote reflection, dissemination and generation of knowledge on social reality from a public policy approach, with a scientific and international perspective. The journal embraces diverse theoretical, epistemological and methodological positions within the field of social sciences, specifically in the subfield of public policy and state administration.

Its scope encompasses the dissemination of original, investigative, reflexive and critical contents, guided by high standards of academic quality, ethics in the production and dissemination of knowledge, and efficiency in the editorial processes. All published articles are evaluated through the external double-blind refereeing system. The journal is aimed at the academic community, teachers, researchers, professors, public officials and people interested in contributing with rigorous and relevant analysis.

Main Topic: International migration, humanitarian crisis, and public policies for the protection of rights

Thematic areas:

  1. Causes of migration and migrant profiles;

  2. Public policies and state responses (regularization processes, migration control policies, reception, integration, or access to services);

  3. Securitization and land borders (border militarization, surveillance technologies, security discourses, and migrant resistance);

  4. Access to rights, basic services, and humanitarian actions from an intersectional perspective;

  5. Mobile subjects and political agency (experiences, forms of action, and collective strategies);

  6. Public narratives, discourses, and media representations of how migration is perceived and managed;

  7. Global governance of migration and asylum (role and intervention of international organizations, tensions between states, international law, and humanitarian commitments).
