Coordination and Call for Papers

Each thematic issue of the journal has rotating guest editors whose role is to provide academic leadership and ensure the scientific quality of the issue.

How are they appointed?

The IAEN Editorial Board is responsible for approving, at a regular meeting, the guest editors for each issue, as well as the central theme and thematic axes of the call for papers.

A call for papers will be approved when it meets the following criteria:

     • It is consistent with the journal’s focus and thematic areas;
     • It demonstrates the academic relevance of the proposed theme;
     • It addresses a topic of international interest or current relevance;
     • It does not repeat the central themes of previous calls for papers;
     • It includes recognized guest editors with substantial professional experience in the proposed field of study.

Up to three guest editors may be appointed for each issue. At least one should preferably be affiliated with another institution or country, in order to expand academic networks and increase the visibility of the call for papers, and another should be a faculty member at IAEN.

If the Editorial Board makes recommendations regarding the call for papers, the guest editors must incorporate them, and the editor will verify compliance.

If, for any reason, one of the guest editors is unable to continue performing their duties during the editorial process, they must notify the IAEN Editorial Board in advance and, where possible, propose an expert who can assume the role. If no proposal is submitted, or if the proposed person is not approved, the IAEN Editorial Board will appoint the person it considers suitable.

What are the responsibilities of guest editors?

The main responsibility of guest editors is to ensure the scientific quality and academic relevance of the issue, given their expertise in the topic of the call. Their responsibilities include the following:

      • Drafting the call for papers and promoting its dissemination through academic networks and other relevant channels, with the support of the IAEN Editorial Office;
     • Participating in the preliminary screening of manuscripts;
     • Proposing potential peer reviewers;
     • Supporting the selection of the articles to be included in the issue, following an analysis of the peer-review reports;
     • Drafting the issue presentation and coordinating the interview;
     • Disseminating the publication.

Editorial decisions —including acceptance, rejection, peer review, copyediting, layout, publication, and verification of compliance with editorial policies— remain the responsibility of the Editorial Office.

Planning and Call for Papers

Planning for each issue of the journal will begin one year in advance and will cover all stages of the editorial process, from the preparation and approval of the call for papers to the publication of the issue.

Estado & comunes will publish two calls for papers each year. These calls will be public and open, and will be disseminated through social media, the institutional website, the journal’s Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, academic networks, email, and other channels deemed appropriate.

The dissemination strategy will be supported by the IAEN Editorial Office and the IAEN Office of Communications.

The call for papers will include, at a minimum, the central theme and its rationale; the subtopics; general information about the journal; admissibility criteria; author guidelines; editorial standards; the submission procedure; and the editorial-process timeline.
