Understanding Institutional Weakness: Reseñas Power and Design in Latin American Institutions

Abstract
Latin America has historically suffered from chronic institutional weaknesses that, among other things, have negatively affected economic performance, the quality of democracy, the vitality of the rule of law, and the social distribution of income. Although this is a central issue in the study and design of institutions, institutionalist literature focused on issues of change and stability has tended to overlook this dimension, assuming as an implicit assumption the strength of formal institutions.
