Brazil's Ideological Influence on the Conclusion of the Agreement in Principle between Mercosur and the European Union
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the influence of the Brazilian governments of Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro on the conclusion of the agreement in principle between Mercosur and the European Union, focusing on their foreign and trade policy discourses. Using a comparative approach based on a critical review of official speeches and institutional documents, this study examines the ideological continuities and ruptures in the foreign and trade policies of both governments. Although both presidents aligned with the political right, Temer's government was more favorable to the agreement, working to remove critical obstacles in the negotiations, which allowed Bolsonaro to adopt a more moderate stance in the subsequent negotiation rounds.
