Argentine Foreign Policy Regarding the Conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip During the Fernández Administration
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to explain Argentina’s positioning regarding the conflicts in Ukraine (February 2022) and the Gaza Strip (October 2023) during the administration of Alberto Fernández. To this end, a qualitative approach is employed through a case study, using bibliographic and documentary records of primary and secondary sources, analyzed through content analysis. The theoretical framework is based on neoclassical realism. It is argued that the Fernández administration's position can be explained, on the one hand, by the impact of these conflict scenarios on the deterioration of international security governance and Argentina’s intention to preserve its relations with the states involved; and, on the other hand, by an autonomist-oriented strategy of international insertion, the peripheral role of both conflicts in the national agenda, and their limited impact on Argentine society. Finally, the empirical findings related to these systemic and domestic variables indicate that this positioning was consistent with the historical principles of Argentine foreign policy, aiming for a cautious and open dialogue with all involved parties.
